Wild in the Woods - seasonal bushcraft workshops in Surrey

Women in the woods on a woodland adventure with Joyful Outdoors, participating in bushcraft skills.

Reconnect with nature & community, leave feeling nourished & revived!

"Good for the mind & soul..."

"Inspiring, empowering, relaxing, healing, calming, joyful.... "

"Deeply enriching, and fun!"

"I like who I am in the forest..."

"The foraged food was amazing..."

"Loved being in the woods away from everyday responsibilities..."

"It's amazing how restorative it is to be in the woods..."

If you like the sound of forest school for grown-ups, this day is for you. Join me for a one-day introduction to foraging & woodland skills.

Step away from the noise of daily life and spend a day immersed in nature, learning, relaxing, and reconnecting with the world around you.

Your day begins in the woods with a warming cup of foraged tea around the campfire as you settle into the rhythm of the forest.

Over the course of the day, we'll forage & delve into the abundance of wild edible plants and learn to identify native trees & understand their traditional uses; we'll wander the woods, collecting tinder and kindling, hone your firelighting skills, get hands-on with a bushcraft knife and enjoy the therapeutic practice of whittling.  There'll be plenty of time for chats, relaxing amongst the trees and just enjoying the woods.

Foraged food is part of the experience, and you'll enjoy drinks, cakes & a light lunch made lovingly with local, seasonal foraged ingredients, including perhaps wild garlic scones, spring greens soup, nettle cordial or sweet woodruff cake, depending on the season.

What's included:
🌿 Full day guided workshop (09.30–17.30)

🌿 Introduction to practical woodland skills inc foraging, tree ID, firelighting, using a bushcraft knife to whittle wood and nature connection
🌿 All materials and equipment
🌿 Foraged teas, cakes & light vegetarian lunch
🌿 Small group experience (max 10)

🌿 A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere

No previous experience is needed just curiosity and a willingness to get stuck in. You’ll leave feeling grounded, relaxed, and a little more confident in your outdoor skills.

It's an ideal woodland skills introduction for those women wanting to join the Rewilding Weekend on Dartmoor in June (click here for more info on that).

A Joyful Outdoors day isn’t just a workshop, it’s a complete experience: part learning, part pause, part reminder of how good it feels to be outdoors.

Happy Joyful Outdoors clients say...

"What a wonderful, revitalising day!

Elspeth led a relaxed, informative day of sheer joy, she's bursting with knowledge on plants....as well as the ecosystem and woods.

The teaching area basecamp was welcoming with plenty of seating and shelter. We learned woodcraft, which was surprisingly meditative & soothing, fire skills and had a blissful forest bathe!

The home cooked scones, crackers, soup and teas from foraged ingredients were delicious. We were very much encouraged to step back and allow nature in. I left delighted and energised."

Nilmini Francis

"I didn't think about work once... I was so absorbed that it felt like I'd had a holiday!"

Miles Hawkins

"A fabulous opportunity to forage, get back to nature and connect with other like-minded women.

Elspeth creates a lovely joyful vibe with plenty of opportunity to take part in activities, or to be more quietly engaged, and is knowledgeable and fun in her manner."

Kirsty Kelley

"A fantastic, peaceful, nourishing morning  spent in the woods with Elspeth and a group of lovely ladies. We foraged and made nettle, ground ivy and pine tea, learnt how to light fires in the wild, ate delicious cake and just made time to be with nature.

Elspeth is extremely knowledgable and passionate about the outdoors and is an expert guide - highly recommend!"

Frequently Asked Questions about Wild in the Woods

Please email elspeth@joyfuloutdoors.co.uk if you can't find the answer to your question.

There's only one answer to this, YES! I'll make some delicious cake for us to share made with foraged ingredients.

When foraging, there are generally a lot of wild plants to talk about in a very small area!

We'll have a gorgeous woodland base from which to explore, and we'll be spending a large chunk of the day there, but will head out into the woods to roam at various points of the day. We'll probably walk less than 1km all day.

Learning about wild plants is for everyone, and is a brilliant way of engaging with nature. It's great for helping us to slow down, really stop and notice nature, for better wellbeing and to add interest to walks. And who knows, you might even be convinced to start using the occasional wild plant in your diet, which is great for your gut health.

I think some people think that foraging is a really niche way of life, but it doesn't have to be....learning about foraging could be the start of a lifelong adventure! And yes, you can still feed your children fish fingers!

Yes! We'll enjoy a light foraged lunch, wild teas & foraged cake. Mmmm.

I encourage people to use their senses when learning about wild plants. We'll crush plants to release their aroma, use high magnification hand lens to really observe the details, and yes where possible and appropriate when out foraging, we taste the wild plants. Of course, that is up to each individual if they want to do that, and depending on individual tolerance and allergies eg anyone with serious allergies may choose to be more cautious. You may wish to bring a bottle of water to wash any plants before you taste them.

It's important that you don't use taste to ID plants, especially as a beginner forager. You must be 150% certain that you have correctly identified a plant and certain that it's edible, before putting it in your mouth.

Please come suitably dressed for the weather and consider the following:

  • wear outdoor clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty and smoky, ideally wool as that is most safe around the fire, long sleeves and long trousers. Beware of plastic-type clothing around the fire.
  • sturdy closed shoes/boots that you are comfortable walking in, preferably waterproof. There's a stream and a couple of old ponds on site so it’s generally pretty wet and muddy, and the path is uneven in places. There are ducks and geese in a lake on the grounds, so the route into the woods is spattered with guano.
  • bring waterproofs even if the forecast is dry, you can leave them in camp but it's better to have and not need them than the other way round.

  • A small rucksack for your personal possessions and a water bottle.
  • A bowl and spoon for your lunch
  • You may want to bring extra snacks & a sandwich to supplement the food provided.
  • Your own drinking water & bottle.
  • A small cloth collecting bag for samples.
  • Any personal medication, antihistamines, epipen etc.
  • Loo roll or tissues and dog poo /compost bags to put it in.

I will bring mats for everyone to sit on and small mugs for wild tea tasting.

There is a toilet in the site car park, and that is a 5 minute walk from camp. Wild weeing in the woods is great, but please take any paper away with you rather than burying as it doesn’t decompose sufficiently. For anything other than wee, please use the car park toilet.

There will be a hand washing station provided at camp, and hand sanitiser.

We will go ahead! We have a gorgous woodland site as our base for the day which will provide adequate shelter from rain. Please make sure you bring appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.

In event of extreme weather conditions ie dangerously strong winds over 30mph, constant torrential rain, thunder/lightening, snow, I will review and provide as much notice as possible in the days leading up to the event. The decision by Joyful Outdoors to cancel an event for safety reasons is final and under these circumstances, Joyful Outdoors is not liable for any travel, accommodation or other costs you might incur if an event has to be cancelled.

Please see the full cancellation and refund conditions here. Essentially, no refunds are given with 14 days or less notice from the date of the event.

It is the policy of Love Her Wild that their events are non-refundable, therefore any event marked for Love Her Wild is not refundable, though we can be flexible if you want to transfer your booking to someone else.

As the climate is getting warmer, ticks are becoming more prevalent in the UK. They hang out on the end of fern branches, waiting to jump onto unsuspecting people as they brush past. For prevention, wear long sleeves & long trousers tucked into your socks, and paler colours so that you can see the ticks on your clothing & can brush them off.

Always check yourself for ticks, and carry a tick remover in your personal first aid kit. Don't worry, we'll remind you to do this and will have tick removers with us, I have extracted many in my time!

There's really useful advice here and here  from NHS on when to be concerned if you've been bitten by a tick.

Use Smidge or other good insect repellent, or Parakito wrist bands and roll-on have also worked well for me to repel ticks.

Bushcrafting by a campfire in Surrey.

Get your dose of nature-based wellness with an evening of food and song around the campfire.

Singing in this setting is not about ability, it’s about connection and the feeling of well-being created by many voices raised together, so please don’t worry if you’re not a regular singer.

Email me to express interest in this, I'm gathering a list of interested folk. Date to be arranged.

Email Elspeth if you're keen to sing around the campfire
